In carrying out Operation Shenandoah II - October 1967, Alpha and Delta companies of the 2nd battalion, 28th regiment "Black Lions", 1st U.S. Infantry Division engaged in one of the Vietnam War´s most ferocious fights. The battle took place nearby Lai Khe, northwest of Saigon. Claiming 64 Americans got killed, the battle report was not declassified until 1991.
Advancing toward a thick jungle in single file, the U.S. Infantrymen were attacked by "unseen" enemy from brilliant-fortified bunkers and high trees. The enemy was Vietnamese combat troop with the size of two battalions detached from 271st regiment, 9th Division of Vietnam Communist Force.
This bloody battle is utterly little known in the U.S. documents as one of the staggering losses during the Vietnam War.
